The Wellcome Trust is a significant landowner in South Kensington and we have owned our estate for nearly 30 years, reflecting our long-term commitment to the area. Our objective is to be a steward, adding value to our estate and the areas surrounding it by making them desirable places to live and work.
Background
The Wellcome Trust owns a number of buildings on Evelyn Gardens, which are part of our South Kensington Estate.
The buildings are currently leased to Imperial College London. They have decided to explore alternative options for their student accommodation in order to meet their aspirations to provide purpose-built accommodation for their students in London.
As a result, we now have an exciting opportunity to transform these historic buildings, returning them back to their original use as residential houses.

The proposals
- Restore the buildings to their historic use as beautiful residential house.
- Provide 89 homes, including family homes.
- Preserve and enhance the buildings, celebrating and retaining the historic façades as a defining feature of Evelyn Gardens.
- Deliver more sustainable, well-insulated, and energy-efficient new homes, without increasing building height.
- Increase biodiversity through additional planting and improvements to the garden squares.
- Maintain the character of the Thurloe and Smith’s Charity Conservation Area through thoughtful, sensitive design.
