The return of the buildings to the Wellcome Trust provides a unique opportunity to restore and refurbish these beautiful buildings, while respecting the historic character of the buildings and the adjoining gardens as a defining feature of Evelyn Gardens.
The proposals convert outdated student accommodation back to good quality residential homes, designed for contemporary living and centred around improved shared garden spaces.
Our approach limits any interventions to the building street fronts and maintains the current building height, introducing attic extensions which will be in keeping with neighbouring properties. We aim to reinstate former front doors to reactivate the streetscape and enhance the rear communal gardens to provide an improved amenity for residents.
The original townhouses would be far too large for today and we are therefore proposing to remodel the interiors, with family duplex units at ground level and apartments above, served by lifts.
Our vision
To enhance the buildings’ historic character, celebrating the original facade and communal gardens, to create high-quality, sustainable homes that preserve the spirit and charm of the Thurloe and Smith’s Charity Conservation area.

Our aspirations
- Preserve and restore the buildings, celebrating and retaining the historic facades as a defining feature of Evelyn Gardens.
- Deliver approximately 90 new homes, from 1-bedroom apartments to spacious 4-bedroom family homes.
- Restore the buildings to their original grandeur and historic use as residential homes through a thoughtful, sensitive design.
- Deliver more sustainable, well insulated and energy efficient new homes, which focus on reuse and retrofit, without increasing the building height.
- Increase biodiversity through additional planting in the garden squares.
- Enhance the shared garden spaces to promote connection and wellbeing and provide improved amenity space.
